Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) / “HR218” Handgun Qualification
a partnership between the Smoking Gun Range and Training Center
and the Box Elder Police Department
Details: The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) , sometimes referred to as “HR218” allows certain former military and civilian criminal justice professionals the opportunity to carry concealed handguns nationwide after meeting certain requirements. This event provides an opportunity to complete one of those requirements, the South Dakota state handgun qualification test. Attendees will fire the same handgun qualification test required annually of all South Dakota officers, according to the guidelines established by the South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission. A maximum of three (3) attempts to pass the test will be allowed on any one evening. Upon successful completion, attendees will receive a wallet card verifying successful completion of the qualification.
The qualification test can be found here:http://www.atg.sd.gov/docs/State%20Handgun%20Qual%20Course%20NOV%202013.pdf
The target utilized for qualification can be found here: https://shop.actiontarget.com/content/let-1a-south-dakota-law-enforcement-training-center-target.asp
1) Prospective attendees must carefully review LEOSA requirements to determine their eligibility. Helpful resources are available from the Fraternal Order of Police at http://www.fop.net/legislative/issues/hr218/hr218faq.pdf, or the National Rifle Association at https://le.nra.org/understanding-leosa/leosa/
2) Positive identification via state or military issued ID.
Ammunition/Equipment Requirements: Serviceable handgun with two magazines, 150rds of ammunition, holster worn on a belt, baseball cap, eye & ear protection. Revolvers are also welcome. Please note that LEOSA rules require qualification with the type of firearm that will be carried, semi-automatic or revolver, not a specific handgun. Previous attendees have had best results testing with the same full size handguns they utilized on duty, and other full size handguns in 9mm and .38spl caliber.
Prohibited: No cross-draw, shoulder, ankle, or pocket holsters. Centerfire handgun calibers only, no .22s.
